Who are Chiropractors and What Do They Do?

Chiropractors are doctors who use conservative health care methods to stimulate the body's own healing abilities. They focus on the anatomy and function of the skeleton, mainly the spine, and the correction of neuro-musculoskeletal problems without the use of drugs or surgery.

In the province of Ontario, chiropractors are regulated by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. Chiropractors are authorized to diagnose and perform manipulative therapy to treat neuro-musculoskeletal problems (nerves, muscles, bones). The main focus of care is to areas of joint dysfunction. Joint dysfunction results from stressors which are placed upon the bio-mechanical system. These areas of joint dysfunction are treated by gentle spinal manipulation. The effectiveness of this therapy is well supported by research.

What training does a Chiropractor receive?

Chiropractors undergo 7 years of intensive post-secondary education. First, they must complete three years of undergraduate study, followed by four years of academic education at an accredited chiropractic college, including a one year internship in a chiropractic or multi-disciplinary clinic. Once students have completed their education, they must pass both a provincial and national set of exams to earn the right to practice as a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC).

When Should I visit a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic care can provide relief from many of today's most common health problems, including headaches, neck and back pain, and tension, as well as chronic conditions such as stiff joints, and arthritis. People of all ages can benefit from chiropractic care.

If you have recently experienced an injury, it is a good idea to have a spinal check-up. If you are not experiencing pain or discomfort, your chiropractor can provide you with preventive care and advice. You will benefit from the information that your chiropractor has to offer about proper posture, working habits, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
